Corruption in India

Corruption In India

Corruption in India is defined as dishonest or fraudulent conduct by any person who has the power and authority to gain personal benefit generally in monetary or money worth.Corruption may include many activities including bribery and embezzlement. Corruption in India in simple terms may be described as ‘an act of bribery’. Corruption is defined as the use of public office for private gains in a way that constitutes a breach of law or a deviation from the norms of society. Scales of corruption can be Grand, Middling or Petty and payment of bribes can be due to collusion between the bribe taker and the bribe giver, due to coercion or even anticipatory.Corruption occurs when an office-holder or other governmental employee acts in an official capacity for personal gain.Corruption in India

Following are the main reason for Corruption in India:

  1. Low Pay scales and Wages as compared to other countries: Most of the employees in government sector are paid low wages and salaries. Hence employees revert to corruption for more monetary benefits.
  2. Few Job opportunities: There are many people who like to get the job offer by paying the bribe. They pay the money to higher officials or politicians or people acting as agents of these politicians in power to get the desired job.
  3. Lack of Strict and speedy punishments: Even if someone is found guilty or even caught red-handed by the anti-corruption officials, the convicts get less punishment or the judgment takes very long. There are ways which they find to get back to their lost seat.
  4. Lack of Unity in public: Public openly criticize corruption but interestingly there is no unity among the public to stop corruption. If a person wants to get his work done, he gets it done by corruption. If the public get united and all of them agree unanimously that they will not pay bribe then the corrupt official will have to work without corruption.
  5. Lack of Independent detective agency: India has no independent detective agency which can investigate with full power and freedom to expose the corrupt individuals. The existing agencies like Central Bureau of investigation are named by the highest court of Indian judicial system as a parrot which indicates how free these investigating agencies to work. Hence anyone who commits offense will not be so afraid of the investigation as they can escape from it by taking help of ruling political party.

6.Lack of enough powers to the judicial system: Judicial system takes years to pass judgment on corruption-related cases. For any corrupt official to be punished he or she cannot be punished till his /her case is proved in the court. Judiciary should have the power to penalize the person as soon as the corruption is reported.

     7. Lack of accountability: In government, there is a big trend of corruption. This is because of lack of accountability. If they receive 100 files to be cleared in a week they may not even clear 50 of them in a week. They tend to postpone the clearance of the files. So those who are in the urgency of the clearance have to get them done by bribing the officials involved in the clearance office. This lack of accountability in government offices is the chief cause of corruption.

If there is a mandate that all the files or at least 95% of files received by government offices for clearance are cleared in the said period than corruption can be minimized to a large extent.

  1. People of India have accepted Corruption In India as an easy way out: Corruption in India is increasing day by day and now it has got into the bloodstreams of the citizen, the moment anyone go to get his/her work done in any department, the first thing they look at is the easy way out or whom to pay bribe to get the work done fast. When there is a tender, you can notice that only a few companies bid for it. This is because the companies having political relations have higher chances of winning while others do not. So, companies with no political influence will not bid for the tender in-spite of being a good company. That is here the number of bidders for a tender will be low due to political interference.Corruption not only has become a pervasive aspect of Indian politics but also has become an increasingly important factor in Indian elections. The extensive role of the Indian state in providing services and promoting economic development has always created the opportunity for using public resources for private benefit.

The prominence of political corruption in India in the 1990s is hardly unique to India. Other countries also have experienced corruption that has rocked their political systems. Since Indira’s victory in her 1971 “GARIBI HATAO” election, all the political parties have made GARIBI HATAO as the main agenda in their campaigns but India is still a Poor Developing Nation.

This was the outburst of Mahatma Gandhi against rampant corruption in Congress ministries formed under 1935 Act in six states in the year 1937. The disciples of Gandhi however, ignored his concern over corruption in post-Independence India, when they came to power.

These causes of corruption have to be eliminated for better growth of the nation. Unless we all come together and unite to fight corruption it will be very difficult for India to be a Corruption free state.

It is only because of Corruption in India, after 70 years, India is still a Developing Nation. So many countries have become developed within a short span after getting Independence. Let’s all come together and say No to Corruption. Our small step taken today will soon blossom into India.
